Photovoltaic Grid Connected System

A grid connected system is connected to a larger independent grid (typically the public electricity grid) and feeds energy directly into the grid. This energy may be shared by a residential or commercial building before or after the revenue measurement point. The difference being whether the credited energy production is calculated independently of the customer's energy consumption (feed-in tariff) or only on the difference of energy (net metering). Grid connected systems vary in size from residential (2-10kWp) to solar power stations (up to 10s of MWp).

How a grid connected solar power system works

Whenever the sun shines (and even in overcast weather), the photovoltaic solar panels (PV) generate DC electricity. The DC electricity is fed into a solar inverter that converts it to 240V 50Hz AC electricity which can then be used by the property/household.

If a grid connect system is producing more power than is being consumed, the surplus is fed into the mains grid. Some electricity companies will meter the electricity fed into the grid by your system and provide a credit on your bill.

During the night the solar cells are not producing power, your power is supplied by the grid as usual. The energy retailer charges the usual rate for the power consumption.

The solar market price has dropped significantly. Right now is the best time to change to solar for a really good price. Solar PV has a very stable and long life endurance. Once the system is installed you can expect a long and hassle free life from your solar power system! With generous government renewable energy rebates you can also save thousands on a grid connect system for a limited time!
